I wrote this semi-fictional Sci-Fi story at a time when I was attending a course on AGI safety (AGI = „Artificial General Intelligence“). The course material consisted to a significant extent of descriptions of serious dangers associated with such machines, and the solutions presented seemed often brittle and mostly not very reassuring. It was difficult to imagine a future world with A.I. which was not filled with horrors. Altogether, it was, at least for me, a bit depressing.
As a consequence, I felt very motivated to imagine a brighter version of the future of humankind. First, I wanted to write an essay, but I felt that when using this text type I would have to mention in every second line that my theories are highly speculative (to say the least). I decided to write a fiction story instead, where I was not forced to prove the correctness of every single of my mental leaps.
But even if this story is pure fiction, I have tried to develop a plausible and convincing scenario which is based on my (admittedly fairly limited) knowledge of machine learning and AGI safety. Because of this, the story is very technical. Maybe it is only digestible for people with some background in computer science.
And please forgive my rather poor English. I’m not a native speaker. I hope you will enjoy my story!
